thredUP’s Resale-as-a-Service: 2022 Year in Review

If thredUP’s Resale-as-a-Service had a theme for 2022, it would be explosive growth. 2022 was our biggest year ever, from the number of new clients we signed, to our growing internal team. We broadened the reach of resale in fashion by bringing new innovative resale programs to more brands and more US shoppers than ever before. Read on for a peek into what RaaS was up to in 2022! 

  • NEW RESALE SHOPS: In 2022, we partnered with over a dozen leading apparel brands to launch their branded resale shops, including Athleta, PacSun, Tommy Hilfiger and Vera Bradley. This represents tremendous growth over 2021, when we had only one branded resale shop live (kudos to early-mover Madewell!). These resale shops are anything but performative marketing—the average thredUP RaaS-powered resale shop has over 5500 items listed, meaning that resale-minded shoppers have a large and inclusive selection of secondhand styles and sizes to choose from every time they come back to shop.

  • OVER 200K CLEAN OUT KITS: The RaaS clean out program received over 200K Clean Out kits from our brand partners in 2022! With around 25 items per average kit, that’s an estimated 5M items. That’s a lot of consumers engaging with brand clean out programs, and a lot of clothing, shoes and accessories being circulated and avoiding landfill.

  • WHO’S POPULAR? Reformation, Torrid, Everlane, Patagonia and Boden were among the hottest reselling brands (from the items customers sent in through RaaS Clean Out kits).

  • A RESALE AWAKENING ACROSS THE INDUSTRY: In 2022, the brands and retailers RaaS partnered or expanded with represented every corner of apparel. From iconic T-shirt brand Michael Stars, to plus-size leader Torrid, bohemian favorite Francesca’s and pop-culture phenom Hot Topic, we saw sustainability—and bottom line—oriented retail leaders across the spectrum take meaningful strides into resale. We couldn’t be more pumped to see so much enthusiasm across the industry.

WHAT’S COMING UP IN 2023? Well, we’re planning on launching resale shops for some awesome, awesome brands in the coming months. Stay tuned…!!
